(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 17)—Sophomore center Scott Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa./Bensalem) (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored two goals while freshman goaltender Mike Stier (Belleville, Illinois/) (Belleville, Ill.) registered 30 saves as the McKendree College hockey team notched a 5-1 victory Saturday at home against Illinois State University.
The Bearcats have won their last two contests to even their overall record at 2-2-0. McKendree, which is in the midst of a season-opening 10-game homestand, will return to the ice Friday to host DePaul University. Faceoff is set for 8:30 p.m. at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights.
Roberts’ first goal of the contest 13 minutes into the second period broke a scoreless tie and served as the catalyst of a four-goal period. Freshman Nick Dreyer (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) (Waterloo, Ill.) made it 2-0 at the 16:49 mark before the Bearcats netted two goals in the final 1:49 of the stanza. Junior center Brad Maggio (Collinsville, Illinois/) (Collinsville, Ill.) scored off an assist from Roberts before sophomore defenseman Matt Defranco (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/) (Philadelphia, Pa.) collected a shorthanded goal just 20 seconds before the intermission.
After the Redbirds ruined Stier’s bid for his first career shutout early in the third period, Roberts put the game away with his second goal in the final 4:06 of play. Stier made 10 saves in each period and limited Illinois State to an 0-for-8 mark on the power play.
Junior defenseman Brent Grimm (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) (O’Fallon, Ill.) added two assists for McKendree.
